Frequently asked questions

Why are the Natural Gas readings continuously estimated? There are issues with taking my readings, how can we resolve this?

For natural gas, we do actual reads every second month, the other month will be estimated.

However, sometimes the contractor may not be able to access the property, locate the meter, or may face issues like unrestrained dogs or locked gates. If we are unable to take an actual reading for four consecutive months, we will contact you to arrange a special reading. You can provide us with the necessary details, and we will schedule a specific date for the special reading and update the meter reader notes for future reference.

Alternatively, you can provide us with your own readings, and we will update your account to keep your readings up to date.

Am I on the correct rates/plan?

  • Low User: Recommended if your gas consumption is less than 330 kWh (after conversion from cubic meters to kWh). Please check with us if this option is available for you. Only some networks offer a low-user option.

Can I finalize my electricity service and keep only Natural Gas or LPG?

  • We only offer additional utilities if you have an active Power Account with us. You will receive an all-energy discount of $0.30 per day for the natural gas portion of your bill as long as you have both natural gas and electricity with us.
  • However, if you were with us on SOLAR ZERO and have now moved to Ecotricity, we are happy to continue providing you with a Natural Gas or LPG account.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Natural Gas / LPG?

  • Only residential customers in the North Island can receive Natural Gas, as there are no gas pipes in the South Island. Natural Gas is a highly combustible, odourless (it has a very strong odour added to it to alert you if there are any leaks), and colourless hydrocarbon gas primarily composed of methane, transferred through underground pipes to your property. It is mainly used for heating homes, cooking, and running appliances such as water heaters and dryers.
  • On the other hand, LPG bottles, which we provide and service the 45kg each bottle option, can be used for various household purposes like heating water, cooking, and heating homes.
  • Installation must be done by an approved contractor and both installation and usage can be costly, as it was historically used to reduce the cost of electricity, however, every situation is different so please speak to a gas fitter to ensure this is the right option for you and your family

Why is the consumption on the meter different from the amount on the invoice?

  • The reading on the gas meter is in cubic meters, this is converted to kwh on billing.  The actual conversion factor varies slightly but is roughly multiplied by 12.

Will I be eligible for the All-Energy Discount if I cancel Natural Gas / LPG?

  • The all-energy discount is only available if you have both electricity and either Natural Gas or LPG with us.

Will it be cheaper if I switch to all electric?

  • It is challenging to compare the cost structure of appliances that run on electricity or gas. We can get the daily power consumption in terms of kWh for the entire property, but appliance-wise power consumption data is not available. This is subject to having a communicating smart meter.
  • For Natural Gas, we can only obtain data on a collective basis every two months, as the meter is analogue, and no specific appliance data is available.
  • Hence, it is not feasible for us to compare.

I suspect a fault/leakage and don't know what to do, how can you help me clarify this and fix it?

  • For Natural Gas, if you smell gas either inside or out, evacuate the area and call 111 and then call Vector 0800 764 764
  • If you know how to turn off the meter and can do so safely, please do
  • For LPG, if you smell gas either inside or outside, evacuate the area and turn off the bottles then call a Gas Fitter to have them checked
  • Depending on the cause of the leak you will be responsible for anything after the meter connection point for natural gas and anything from the connection point for LPG.

How long does my LPG order take?

  • If you place a Standard Order, LPG bottles are typically delivered within 10 business days, however, some areas are serviced less often and it can take up to 21 days in these more remote locations.
  • If you require an urgent delivery, call 0800 785 733. Please indicate this on either the call, the web reorder form or from my account when placing a bottle order, urgent deliveries are used when you are nearly out of gas in both bottles as its not required if you are running low on just one bottle (you will have enough in the other).
